More than 7,500 birds were slaughtered after three cases of bird flu were confirmed at three poultry farms in Yunlin County, the Taiwan Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (BAPHIQ) said on Sunday, July 7.
Birds from two duck farms and one turkey in Dongshi County were found infected with a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu H5N2, the BAPHIQ statement said.
According to BAPHIQ, to prevent the spread of the virus, the BAPHIQ Yunlin station collected 6520 ducks and 1121 turkeys in three poultry farms and monitored the on-site disinfection process.
According to the latest data, the total number of poultry farms that have been infected with the virus reached 35 this year;
BAPHIQ explained that the weather in Taiwan, especially in the central and southern parts of the country, has recently changed dramatically due to south-west winds, which has led to an increased risk of poultry morbidity.
The Bureau reminded poultry farmers of the need for more efficient daily management of their farms, including maintaining proper poultry density, adequate nutrition, adequate ventilation and other necessary measures to maintain the health of their birds.
Officials also called on poultry farmers to immediately report to the authorities any unusual cases of bird death and deviations in their behavior on their farms.
