An upward trend in onion prices has been observed in Ukrainian markets since the first days of April.
Now the price of onions is 6 times higher than on the same date in 2018. After the next jump in prices, high quality onions in the Ukrainian markets offer 22-25 UAH / kg ($ 0.82-0.94 / kg), which is 26 % more expensive than in the last days of last week.
Onion prices are rising, primarily due to a sharp decline in imports, which Ukraine tried to save the situation caused by the lack of local vegetables. The main suppliers of onions to Ukrainian markets this season are Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. But even these countries have almost exhausted stocks of quality onions in their storages. Neighboring countries that could correct the situation with onion supplies have rather high prices due to the low yield of onions in 2018.Many experts and producers made forecasts about the current situation on the Ukrainian onion market. Onion production in 2018 decreased not only in Ukraine, but also in a number of European countries due to crop failure. This season, the leading suppliers of vegetables to the shelves of Ukraine are the eastern CIS countries.
But they are gradually selling off all their stocks. The only way to stabilize onion prices is through wholesale deliveries of the 2019 crop vegetable from Egypt, Tajikistan and Azerbaijan. Now the new crop is sold in Tajikistan at a wholesale price of $ 0.16-0.19 / kg, says EastFruit spokesman Alexander Khorev.
