Over the weekend, there was a collapse in prices on the early onion market in the southern regions of Ukraine. Prices halved, causing a panic among Ukrainian farmers.
The current situation does not surprise leading market experts who believe that it is expected due to the seasonal increase in onion sampling. In addition, the price is also affected by the fact that many sellers have not yet completed the sale of the remnants of onions of imported origin.
Merchants are still selling an early imported product, and harvesting locally grown onions has peaked in 2019. Young onions are poorly stored, so they need to be sold as quickly as possible.
Given that the area under growing onions in Ukraine this year has risen sharply, the current price reduction becomes clear. This situation happens quite often and experienced sellers are able to deal with it, says Tatyana Getman, head of the Analytics department of the Shuvar ORP.
According to data on June 3, 2019, at the largest wholesale market in Western Ukraine, the Shuvar ORSP in Lviv, new onions are offered at a price of 10-17 UAH / kg, which amounts to 0.33-0.57 € / kg.
The increase in the number of onion offers is also reflected in the volume of its sales on the market of Shuvar ORSP. During May of this year, 2.4 thousand tons of onions were sold through the market, while a year ago 1.5 thousand tons were sold.
