In Ukraine, Nikolaev, Odessa, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhya regions are promising for sesame cultivation. On their lands you can get a crop of 15-20 kg / ha, says Vera Konovalova, a junior researcher at the Askaniy State Agricultural Research Station.
During the years of independence of Ukraine, new zoned sesame varieties for the south of Ukraine were created and entered into the Register of Plant Varieties. Their initiator is the Institute of Oilseeds of NAASU. Experimental crops of sesame were laid by scientists of the Askaniya research station in 2013. The study of this culture in the south of Ukraine continues today. During this time, sesame has proved to be a capricious plant, loving heat and sunlight. Already at temperatures below +15 ° C, it stops growing. Sesame makes such high demands on sunlight throughout the entire growing season.
The best precursors for sesame seeds are legumes, grains, winter wheat. It is possible to grow a culture in one place with a frequency of 6 years in order to protect it from diseases and pests.
Sesame responds well to the application of micronutrient fertilizers, increasing the yield and quality of the fruit. Plant growth regulators, micronutrient fertilizers, and biologicals increase sesame resistance to adverse conditions and pests, says Vera Konovalova.
