Africa has significant untapped agricultural potential. Although the continent accounts for 60% of the arable land in the world, it gives only 4% of the total production.
Oxford Business Group (OBG), a well-known global research and consulting company, publishes the survey “Agriculture in Africa, 2019”, which analyzes the state of the sector and its medium-term development prospects.
This publication is the first of its kind published by OBG under a cooperation agreement with OCP Group, the largest player in the global fertilizer market.
“Although 80% of the African population works in the agricultural sector and the continent’s population is expected to double by 2050, the main task for the coming years will be to provide adequate solutions for educating young people and meeting the future needs of the sector,” says Suhir Mzali, a regional Editor for Africa at OBG.
“By 2050, we will have to double grain production to feed the entire population. Given that production in most developed regions is already at an optimal level of productivity, Africa is the only market able to meet this food need in the coming years.
For our continent, it is crucial to move from subsistence agriculture to competitive and commercial agriculture, ”explains Karim Lotfi Senhaji, CEO of OCP Africa.
