In February of this year, the Ukrainian side set an absolute record in onion imports. In March, the supply of goods to Ukraine does not stop.
The countries of origin of imported onions are Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Over the past 8 months of 2018, the country purchased about 50 thousand tons of onions. For comparison, for the entire season of 2010/2011. 42 thousand tons of onions were imported, which was considered a record.
Due to imports, market operators observed a significant drop in onion prices in the second half of February. But the current situation has no analogues. In fact, now we can talk about the largest monthly imports over the past decade. It should be taken into account that not all of the onions purchased abroad were on sale. Some merchants keep it, expecting price increases, says Tatyana Getman, representative of the Shuvar ORSP.In the first week of March, an increase in the cost of onions was recorded in one of the largest markets in Western Ukraine, ORSP “Shuvar”. To date, the goods are sold from a car site at 12-14 UAH / kg, which is € 0.40-0.47 / kg.
