In the Danube-Drava National Park, farmers breed black Hungarian sheep of the Racka breed.
Ratski sheep deal with coarse vegetation better than any lawn mower. They are not picky and fertilize the soil well, thereby supporting the life of insects and birds. According to the head of the Directorate of the Danube-Drava National Park, non-lean meat of sheep is highly appreciated by Croats and local customers from Ertilos, Szombathely and Sopron.
50 years ago in Hungary there were about a million sheep of Rack. Now there are only two or three thousand left. These ancient animals entered the country in the 9th century and were first called Central Asian wild sheep. Ratska breed sheep are distinguished by swirling horns in the form of a spiral up to 50 cm long and thick wool of light brown, cream and black color.
There are almost a hundred gray cows and heifers on the blood of sheep of the ancient Hungarian breed at the Drávaszentes site. Animals spend spring and summer in local dense grassy meadows.
Gray cattle were started here in 2001. Then there were only twenty animals. Now the nature reserve is developing successfully. It regularly organizes excursions for visitors who can look at horses, donkeys, goats and other animals.
