ALDI Nord and ALDI SÜD sell hail damaged apples. So-called “weather apples” are apples that have suffered from extreme conditions, for example, have been injured by the sun or hail. Despite their shortcomings, they fall on the shelves of ALDI stores, because they taste just as good as their impeccable brothers and sisters.

Apples are available this week as promotional materials in all ALDI affiliates. Weather apples are especially suitable for further processing, especially at Christmas, for example, for desserts.

Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and can affect the entire crop. This can have huge financial implications for manufacturers.

Otherwise, they would have to sell industrial apples at a lower price, otherwise they would end up in animal feed or compost, ”says Dr. Julia Adu, Director of Corporate Responsibility at ALDI SÜD.

Apple seeds contain amygdalin glycoside, which, when split in the stomach, releases hydrocyanic acid, the strongest poison. Therefore, eating apples with seeds is not allowed.

The new product line is now on the shelves in Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd. One producer that benefits from ALDI weather apples is Mike Stölken, an apple producer in the Altes Land region. Direct speech: “Last summer, I and many other farmers literally lost their crops,” says Mike Stölken.

Almost 80% of apples on its 20 hectares. lands were damaged by strong hail. The situation was saved by the offer of ALDI, which wished to sell apples of a non-marketable appearance.

Selling "weather apples", ALDI seeks to inform consumers about the value of food. Fruits and vegetables are natural products in which visual imperfections are not unnatural and do not affect taste.

However, many products are sorted out due to minor defects and do not reach retail shelves. Therefore ALDI SÜD already offers second-class apples: Krummen Dinger, which are not as round as other apples. However, in terms of taste, they are not inferior to apples in perfect shape.
