The El Nino effect swept through Northern Mindanao, the administrative region of the island in the south of the Philippine archipelago.
The Philippine Ministry of Agriculture has reported aggregated data on crop damage and the negative effects on farmers and farm workers from this mysterious natural phenomenon in two provinces.
At least 2577 hectares of sown areas of rice, 5979 hectares of sown areas of corn and 29 hectares of sown areas of vegetable crops were affected. In monetary terms, the damage incurred is as follows: rice sown areas were affected by GBP 8.075 million, corn sown areas were affected by GBP 279.69 million and vegetable area damage amounted to GBP 4450 million.
Northern Mindanao covers the provinces of Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Lanao del Norte and Camiguin. To date, there is as yet no evidence of damage from three other provinces. However, the PAGASA State Weather Bureau said that the El Niño effect this year is rather weak compared to 2015, which was the most severe in this regard in the history of observations .
