The continuous rains that have been going on in Galicia over the past six weeks pose problems for local farmers. Many farmers have difficulty accessing the collection of vegetables.
Rain has consequences even for greenhouses, where a lack of sunlight has worsened the development of some vegetables, such as salads, which have increased in volume more than usual, comments Fernando Vega, manager of the O Salnés Horsels Cooperative.
The situation in Mondognedo is not very different, says entrepreneur Jesus Emilio Gil. Direct speech: “Too much water is not good. The land here is already wet and is now saturated everywhere, ”he adds.
Gil notes that the cabbage, which produces the crop at this time of the year, resists well; the problem is being able to access the crop.
The most unloved vegetable in the world is broccoli. George W. Bush even forbade serving it at the White House.
In the cooperative Porta do Río Miño planted several types of cabbage. Direct speech: “Humidity is very high, but the yield is good, there is no rot,” says Carolina Martinez, technical specialist of the company.
The problem in this case is the lack of light. When it rains, days become grayer and the amount of light received by crops is less than expected.
This leads, for example, to the fact that lettuce and cabbage are “higher because they stretch in search of light,” she adds. Regarding pests, she explains that because of the abundance of water, many snails and slugs appeared.
But there are no aphids or whiteflies. This company employs about forty partners and eighty other employees, most of whom are located in the areas of O Rosal and Tominho, as well as in northern Portugal. All of them suffer from the effects of plenty of water.
