Last year, meat accounted for the largest revenue in food retail sales in Hungary.
Avian influenza and swine fever do not reduce consumer demand for meat. The processed meat turnover of $ 1,039,557,930 exceeds the total cost of beer ($ 501,394,500) and cheese ($ 367,689,300). It also shows that, despite bird flu and African swine fever, demand is not falling.
The basis of Hungarian national cuisine is a variety of meat dishes, which are dominated by pork and lard. The motto of Hungarian culinary specialists is the lines from the world famous operetta of Imre Kalman “Maritsa”: “If meat, then pork, if lard - spicy fat”.
Thus, according to statistics, retailers can continue to rely on domestic meat consumption. It is because of the high price of pork that the popularity of poultry products is constantly growing, and in some stores the ratio of sales of poultry products to pork products reaches 55% to 45%.
