Juniper Mordigan Gold is used in horticulture as a decoration of landscapes of park areas or personal plots. Description of the plant, the rules for planting it, as well as how to take care of the hybrid, read on.
Botanical Description
Juniper belongs to the genus of evergreen coniferous shrubs. Also, this plant is known as heather, it belongs to the Cypress family. Juniper middle Mordigan Gold is a hybrid of the Pfitzeriana Aurea variety, from which it differs by a more compact crown and slow growth of only 10 cm per year.
Phytoncides released by juniper needles disinfect the air from pathogenic bacteria.
The bush has a sprawling top with horizontally growing branches. An adult plant reaches a height of 1 m, its crown in diameter is 2 m. The needles of the bush are not prickly, its hue is golden. Shoots at the beginning of development have a green color, then with age they acquire a yellow hue.
The bark is vertically flaky, its color is dark gray. This type of plant has a wide distribution area. Juniper can grow on the lands of the Northern Hemisphere, starting from the Arctic and ending with subtropical mountainous regions.
Landing
Juniper seedlings are best obtained from specialized nurseries. When choosing them, the plant is inspected for rot and dryness, if any, then the purchase should be abandoned.
Landing is carried out in the spring from mid-April, when the air temperature warms up to + 15 ° C. Usually seedlings of the Mordigan Gold variety are sold in pots with a volume of 5 liters. They are planted in open ground by the transshipment method, that is, they take the plant together with an earthen lump from the container and, without clearing the soil from the roots, transplant.
Important! Landing of heather is carried out in sunny areas, when choosing a place for landing, it is necessary to take into account the possibility of flooding in rains and snow melt. You should not plant juniper in the lowlands, so that due to flooding there will be no problems with rotting of the root system.
Step-by-step instructions for landing:
- Dig a hole 6–8 cm deep and wider than the volume and diameter of the earth lump in the tank.
- At the bottom of the hole, pour a drainage base of stones at 2 cm.
- Then pour a layer of sand of about 4 cm.
- Carefully remove the seedling from the pot, after moistening the soil in it a little.
- Place the sapling together with the earthen lump in the pit so that the basal neck rises 5 cm above the soil level.
- Next, fill the hole with soil and water the plant with 5 liters of water.
- Mulch the soil with a layer of 5–8 cm. Peat or sawdust can be used as a material.
Juniper Care
It’s not difficult to take care of the juniper bush. It is resistant to droughts and is not demanding in watering, so hydration is carried out once a month. For an adult bush, it is enough to add 10-15 liters of liquid.
After each watering or rain, it is necessary to loosen the soil near the trunk, which will enrich the rhizome with oxygen and avoid the formation of a crust on the soil surface, which provokes stagnation of moisture and can lead to mold.
Important! The trimming procedure should be carried out only with sharpened tools that have passed disinfection. After removal of the branches, the sections of the sections are covered with garden varnish to prevent infection of the plant with fungi.
The plant does not require forming pruning; therefore, only sanitary removal of dry branches damaged by diseases and pests is carried out annually. Shoots are also cut, which thicken the crown and grow inward.
Once a month, peat mulching can be carried out. This process will avoid unnecessary work to remove weed grass. The plant is fertilized 1-2 times a year. For digging, nitroammophoska is added in an amount of 40 g per 1 m². This fertilizer can be carried out at the end of spring and in the middle of summer.
Mordigan Gold is resistant to frost up to -25 ° C, so it does not need shelter for the winter. But in the first 2 years after planting in open ground, you should be safe and still build a cover from cardboard boxes or cover the plant with burlap.
