This week, a loophole in the trade agreement between the European Union and Ukraine was fixed in the European Parliament.

The EU intends to amend the trade agreement with Ukraine to correct a loophole that allows Ukrainian poultry farmers to export poultry meat to the EU market without taxes.

According to the current agreement, the import of poultry with bone from Ukraine is not taxed, but this will change as soon as the revised agreement receives the approval of the Council after ratification of the agreement by Ukraine, according to the magazine Rzeczpospolita.

In a resolution adopted with 444 votes in favor, 128 against and 74 abstentions, MPs called on Ukraine to fully comply with the trade agreement on good cooperation between the EU and Ukraine. They added that food safety and health standards apply to all goods imported into the EU.

The new rules will introduce a unified tariff for boneless meat and establish a new limit on duty-free imports of poultry from Ukraine. After the duty-free quota has been exhausted, Ukrainian exporters will have to pay customs duties on additional exports to the EU.

Polish producers of poultry meat are constantly raising the problem of Ukrainian poultry imports, which flood the EU market, in favor of producers such as MHP, which has its own processing plants in Slovakia. Over the past three years, imports of poultry with bones from Ukraine increased by almost 15 times.
