- To obtain a useful vegetable plant that nourishes the body with valuable elements during a period of lack of vitamins.
- For the use of sprouted bulbs.
Advantages of the method
- The method of germination in plastic bottles has several advantages:

Planting onions in a bottle
You can plant a vegetable plant starting in January. In order to properly land, you need to prepare everything you need, namely: eggplant, soil and planting material.
Did you know? On the walls of one of the largest Egyptian pyramids - Cheops - inscriptions are placed that indicate how much garlic and onion was allocated for food to the workers building it. These vegetable plants were given to builders to prevent the development of epidemics.
Bottle preparation
Here is a detailed instruction on how to make a bottle for planting onions:
- Take a clean and well-dried 2-, 3- or 5-liter plastic eggplant.
- Make a few small drainage holes in the bottom.
- Mark several circles on the walls with a marker - the places where you want to place the bulbs, placing them in a checkerboard pattern. The bottom row should be at a minimum distance of 5 cm from the bottom.
- Use a sharp knife, scissors or a soldering iron to cut holes. They should be smaller in size than onion heads.
- Cut the neck, leaving a hole in which the onion head can easily pass with the hand of a person.
Important! To make it easier to cut holes, you can pour water into the eggplant and freeze it. It will be easier to cut on a hard bottle.
Soil preparation
The soil for cultivation is prepared from the following components:
- garden land;
- peat;
- humus.
For those who do not like to mess around in the ground, there is another way - to grow a vegetable in wet toilet paper or in paper towels. They need to be wet well squeezed and pushed into the eggplant. Also moistened sawdust, vermiculite are suitable for planting.
Selection and preparation of planting material
This method most often grows sevoc, but ordinary onions are also suitable. Large heads are not suitable for this purpose. Before bulbs are placed in the ground, they must be carefully inspected for rot, damage, stains. Only healthy, whole specimens are suitable for planting.
3 days before the planned placement in the ground, the heads must be put in a warm place. If there is not much time, then they can be soaked in water heated to + 50 ° C for 30 minutes. To prevent the development of diseases, potassium permanganate can be added to water.Optional, but it is advisable to soak the heads in a growth stimulator, according to the recommendations for use contained in the instructions. So they sprout faster. It is necessary to plant only well-dried bulbs.
The scheme of planting bulbs in a bottle
The technology of planting onion heads is as follows:
- Place a layer of expanded clay or pebble drainage on the bottom of the bottle.
- Fill the eggplant with soil to the bottom holes.
- Well tamped.
- Place the bulbs in the holes, with the roots inward, and the main part outward, so that they completely cover the holes and prevent the spilling of the soil.
- Pour a layer of soil to the next holes.
- To water.
- Insert the bulbs into the next row of holes.
- Continue on the same principle until the bottle is filled with earth to the top. Watering should be done in layers.
- One large or several small heads can also be planted in the wide upper hole, or you can simply cover it with a cut-off neck.
- Place the eggplant on a well-lit window sill.
Important! It is advisable to install a container with bulbs on a large tray in which water will accumulate, pouring out during irrigation.

Landing care
As with any indoor planting, the bulbs in the eggplant will need care. It will consist of regular watering and periodic dressing.
Lighting
Onion is a warm and photophilous plant. Its growth and development depend on good lighting. An eggplant with onion heads must be placed on the windowsill, which is adequately illuminated by sunlight. Better if it goes to the south or east side.
In the evening, it is advisable to install additional lighting.
Temperature mode
Successful sprouting of greens requires heat. In the room where the green onion grows, the temperature should be maintained at + 18 ... + 25 ° С. If the room is too hot (above + 30 ° C) or cold, then onion growth will slow down.
Feeding
You can grow vegetables without dressing. However, more greens are achieved by fertilizing. Typically, complex formulations with an NPK of 10-10-10 are used. They are prepared in accordance with the instructions from the manufacturer. The finished mixture is filled into a syringe and carefully introduced into the soil.
Top dressing can be applied only after watering.
Watering
Water the onions in moderation in the morning. For humidification, it is worth using tap water, passed through a filter that cleans of harmful impurities, or that has been left to stand for 1–2 days. It should not be cold, but warmed to room temperature. Cold watering can trigger the development of fungal infections. When moisturizing, you need to ensure that moisture does not get on the bulbs. This may cause them to rot. It is convenient to water using a cut-off neck in the form of a funnel.
Dates and basic rules for harvesting
You can collect green feathers as they grow. The first sprouts will appear after 2-3 weeks. You need to cut them with scissors. You can remove greens for 2 months. In the future, the bulbs will already exhaust all the nutrients from the earth, which means the feathers will become tasteless, lose their juiciness and most of the useful elements.
Thus, in winter you can easily grow green onions on the windowsill. To do this, you only need a roomy eggplant and nutritious soil. If you follow the recommendations for preparation and planting, then before the beginning of spring, healthy and tasty greens will appear on your table.Did you know? In 1985, the first cookbooks in the form of clay tablets, written 4 thousand years ago, were transcribed. They contained information that the inhabitants of Ancient Mesopotamia ate onions, leeks, shallots and garlic.
